Wales 2003

I have many stories of dad getting drunk as it was a regular occurrence. However it is always the Wales trip that springs to mind more often, I think it’s because it became somewhat a comedy sketch. He was doing well at his brother’s house, sticking to the beers which normally made him generally drunk, but it was when his brother offered him some spirits that it went downhill, well he went downhill quite literally! We had a 10 minute walk from Steve’s house to the B&B we were staying in. I was in a family room with mum and dad so I knew I was in for a sleepless night as soon as he downed the whisky. He could not walk in a straight line and finally toppled over halfway back landing in a ditch at the side of a lane. My favourite memory of this night is that of Scott trying to get dad up from his arse but in doing so managed to spin him around like spinning top on the gravel. Scott eventually got him up and we managed to get 100 yards from the B&B when we saw dad lose his footing again and fall sideways into a hedge. Again we managed to get him back on two feet again and into the family room where he decided to take a nose dive into the bin situated by the door. Mum managed to get him into bed then we all settled to sleep. However we were awoken not long after by the sound of a chinking noise, mum turned on the light to find dad inside the wardrobe messing about with the empty hangers. Again he went back to sleep were he decided to "saw logs" for what seemed like hours. I had to get up and move my duvet to the bathroom to get some sleep. The next morning me and mum woke to find no dad. Eventually we found him outside in the car, he was worried as he remembered keeping us awake so he thought he would hide in the car for a bit. He also told us that he had lost his glasses somewhere between Steve’s and the B&B. We decided to take a walk back to Steve’s step by step. 100 yards from the B&B, sitting in a dad-shaped dent in the hedge were his glasses, sitting looking out at him almost in disappointment that they had been left behind. You have given me the best memories dad – I will treasure them xxxxxxx
